Horrible Story
If someone wanted to post horrible stories like this and give it as an example of all Americans, one could find something every day. But we all know that this is a horrible aberration. Nonetheless, these guys remind me of some of the horrible emails I get from the anti-Muslim bigots who talk the same way. This shows that these people ARE dangerous. A woman who authorities said was sexually abused, beaten and stabbed while held captive for at least a week was repeatedly called a racial slur during the attacks, the victim’s mother said.
Six people, all white, including a mother and son and a mother and daughter, were arrested in connection with the alleged abduction of the 23-year-old black woman, sheriff’s officials said Monday.
[...]The woman’s abductors called her the N-word “every time they stabbed her,” the woman’s mother told The Charleston Gazette for a story published Tuesday.
[...]Besides being sexually assaulted, the woman had been stabbed four times in the left leg and beaten, Porter said. Her eyes were black and blue. The wounds were inflicted at least a week ago, deputies said.
The woman was forced to eat rat and dog feces and drink from a toilet, according to the criminal complaint filed in magistrate court. She also had been choked with a cord, it alleges.
“The things that were done to this woman are just indescribable,” Porter said.
One of those arrested, Karen Burton, is accused of cutting the woman’s ankle with a knife. She used the N-word in telling the woman she was victimized because she is black, according to the criminal complaint.
Deputies say the woman was also doused with hot water while being sexually assaulted.
“She wakes up in the middle of the night screaming ‘Mommy,”‘ the mother told the paper. “What’s really bad is that we don’t know everything they did to her. She is crying all the time.”
The Associated Press normally does not name victims of suspected sex crimes, and is not identifying the mother to protect the identity of her daughter.
The six suspects were arrested Saturday and Sunday. Deputies were still trying to determine whether the woman knew her assailants, Porter said.
Brewster, the 49-year-old who owns the home where the alleged attacks occurred, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and giving false information during a felony investigation.
Her son, Bobby R. Brewster, 24, also of Big Creek, is charged with kidnapping, sexual assault, malicious wounding and assault during the commission of a felony.
Burton, 46, of Chapmanville, is charged with malicious wounding, battery and assault during the commission of a felony.
Her daughter Alisha Burton, 23, of Chapmanville, and George A. Messer, 27, of Chapmanville, are charged with assault during the commission of a felony and battery.
Danny J. Combs, 20, of Harts, is charged with sexual assault and malicious wounding.
All six remained in custody Tuesday in lieu of $100,000 bail each, and all have asked for court-appointed attorneys.

Well since you brought up the “only white people do these things” comment: in a town about an hour away from where I used to live police are still searching for 6 out of a total of 10 black teens between the ages of 14-18 years of age who gangraped/sodomized and beat a haitian immigrant and forced her to perform oral sex on her 12 year old son.

Good Lord. This really is sick. Too sick. I haven’t heard about this on the news yet. But if Muslims did this…subhan’Allah, could you imagine the hell we would get? May God bless that woman. There are some really really sick people in this world.
That is sad and disturbing. I read about this case and the Dunbar Florida case and they both prompted me to seek refuge in Allah.

It appears that you view conflict only through a religious lens. That is such a narrow and limited way of viewing history and present day conflicts.
This story harkens back to a painful and dark period in the history of MY people. It seems like you missed the point. Some of us are targeted because of our race, ethnicity, or gender. That is the most frightening thing about white supremacists. They want a society where they can dominate and commit acts of violence with impunity. Perhaps that need for power, motivated these pieces of white trash to prey on someone who could not defend herself. Shudder.

I’m not a lawyer so I’m confused why these perpetrators were *only* charged with malicious wounding, battery, assault, and kidnapping as opposed to the more serious charge of aggravated assault or even attempted second-degree murder, such as the case of the Jena Six???

Anon, what was done to that Haitian woman and her son was a horrible crime. Those responsible should die. However, it was done by a pair of juvenilles, THIS crime was done by an entire white family. There is a problem with racial tensions in this country whether you care to believe it or not.

Till died while he was being beaten in a shed by Milam and Bryant for what he had said to Mrs. Bryant. Bryant asked for “the boy who did the talking” when he showed up at Moses Wright’s house. Simeon Wright and Wheeler Parker were both on TV recently and Wright confirmed that Till had whistled. Could say it was an “honor killing” . Till was only 14, although taller and bigger than Mrs. Bryant.
The jurors did not believe that the pictures of the dead body they were shown was Till. There were lies being circulated that Till had fled back to Chicago.
Afterwards, the stores owned by the Bryant family went out of business, and banks would not do business with either Milam or Bryant.
I heard on CNN today that this woman was in a relationship with one of the white guys. There is also a drug history. That still does not justify what happened to her.

As for the case in West Virginia, cases of sustained cruelty like this are not new and although this woman was chosen on the basis of her race, I wonder if the motive for it was the desire to just harm someone rather than racism as such. In this country there were two incidents earlier this year of mentally retarded men being murdered by yobs they let into their house, probably because they were lonely. They were beaten up and abused in other ways, and eventually killed (one of them by being thrown off a railway bridge). The Guardian featured a letter by someone who runs a charity for the mentally disabled who claimed that it was a “disablist hate crime”, and I’m not saying they don’t happen, but some people just get a kick out of being cruel, and choose the mentally retarded because they can be suggestible and/or lonely, or (as here) Black people because they regard them as fair game.

The general account of the case is that Emmitt Till was beaten to death because he whistled at a white woman. His murder was no honor killing, but a terrorist method of enforcing social domination. It was not an act to regain the honor of a white woman, instead it was an act the punished a young boy for stepping outside his place. 4,743 people who were lynched in the United States between 1882 and 1968. Not all of them were black, but my grandmother has told me stories of seeing lynchings and running from groups of white men in the south in order to escape being raped or lynched. The terrorism of lynchings was invigorated after the film Birth of the Nation provided a romantic view of the KKK as defenders of the honor an integrity of the South. Back to Emmitt Till, his mother had an open casket funeral in order to show the world what they did her baby. Those pictures were published all over the U.S. and if you read the Civil Rights reader to the tele-course “Eyes on the Prize” you will find that it is generally agreed that the Emmitt Till case helped sparked the Civil Rights movement. The national attention the case brought is probably one of the reasons why people did not do business with the Bryant family. Also, if you look at court rulings up to the early 70s, you will find that whit jurors systematically convicted any black man accused of a crime, espeically when it came to rape of a white woman, theft, or murder. On the flip side, you will find that a white jury normally acquitted white defendents if their victims were Black, whether that was rape, murder, or theft. I find your account of the Emmitt Till case to be devoid of the broader social and political currents of the time. Maybe it has to do with your lack of critical engagement with this issue, but your tone is perculiar
Danial, you undermine your credibility with the use of such foul, sexist, and violent language. In fact, when you insult her I feel violated as a woman. It makes me wonder if we have a point of disagreement would you insult me int that manner. I also wonder if you talk to you mother, sisters, daughters, or aunts in that way. I wonder how would you feel if someone talked to your loved one in that way. But then again, this is the internet. So would you speak to a woman in her face in that way? I find that when a singlar bizaar item is held up for scrutiny there is usually some kind of agenda by the story teller.
Why are there more weird people, events, today? There are not, they just get world wide coverage and we have 24 hour news.
Yes, a sad crime perpetrated by sad people but google the same circumstances in any society and if they fairly report crime you’ll find it.

Yes, the Till case sparked the Civil Rights movement. It was the Last Straw of the old order. I have studied it extensively. The account I gave was too short to do the story justice.

This is definitely a tragic story. We should all pray for this sisters recovery both emotionally, spiritually, and physically. However, some people will use this incident for own selfish agendas.
We as AA muslims must stop being silent about the atrocities that take place in the muslim world against non-arabs and other minority groups. Unfortunately, we must be the conscience of the Umah here in the U.S.
The silence from AA muslims is deafening regarding the Sudan, Mauritania, Niger, Egypt, and other places. We must not remain silent otherwise our credibility will continue to be attacked by opportunistic christians and jews who seek to divide the muslim community.

In this case, if the Muslims were vocal on this issue in a dignified way, it would help garner more respect for the Muslims than passing out hundreds of “Jesus in Islam” flyers. If the NOI steps up to help her, most of us will dismiss them and bring up the old attacks upon the groups work by questioning their `aqeedah.
And just to remind our fellow Muslims, Islamophobia is rising but it’s still much more dangerous being Black in American than being non-AA Muslim. There are sick people all over this world,of every race creed and color. That being said, people find there own reasons to commite these crimes , it may be hate, there god there lifestyle or just because there sick. But race is is only a factor if its a hate crime. a white man that comments a crime deserves the same punishment as a blackman or indan ect. As far as the people who make and enforce are laws there is always gonna be those who stand for what is right and those who wanted the position for power or there own personal gain or cause!
