This is simply appalling:
Black US AIDS rates rivals some African nations. Five percent of the population here in DC has AIDS (80% of the cases are black)
This is overwhelmingly behavior driven, but no one wants to say it
The AIDS epidemic among African-Americans in some parts of the United States is as severe as in parts of Africa, according to a report out Tuesday.
“Left Behind - Black America: A Neglected Priority in the Global AIDS” is intended to raise awareness and remind the public that the “AIDS epidemic is not over in America, especially not in Black America,” says the report, published by the Black AIDS Institute, an HIV/AIDS think tank focused exclusively on African-Americans.

As someone who has worked in HIV research for years, I can attest to the fact this this is a rampant epidemic in the African American community and is largely being ignored in the Hispanic community (as their rates of infection continue to increase). African Americans also have shorter survival times on average (a disparity consistent across all diseases and disorders). HIV /AIDS has become one of the leading (if not the leading) cause of death for American Americans. It is the number one cause of death for Black women between the ages of 24 and 34. Washington DC is definitely an epicenter for AIDS/ HIV. I could go on and on about the reasons why this is happening: stigma, denial, educational issues, resources, ignorance and so on and so forth. I would like to point one thing out. It is estimated that United States has the largest in-prison HIV infected population in the world. However, the US prison system does not mandate mandatory HIV/AIDS testing.
