UPDATE: Keith Josef Adkins on last weekend’s loses
A sad weekend. Isaac was from my neck of the woods
Issac Hayes, the baldheaded, baritone-voiced soul crooner who laid the groundwork for disco and whose “Theme From Shaft” won both Academy and Grammy awards, died Sunday afternoon after he collapsed near a treadmill, authorities said. He was 65.
Hayes was pronounced dead at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis an hour after he was found by a family member, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office said. The cause of death was not immediately known.
Who remembers when Chris Rock tried to order one rib?

Definitely not a good weekend.
I had mixed feelings about him being a scientologist, and I’ll always remember him as Chef and his chocolate salty balls.
I do! When I first married my husband he let me know that he had seen I’m Gonna Get You Sucker. He thought that made him an expert on blacks…lol!
I also remember Bernie Macs earlier acts and made the mistake yesterday of clicking on his Def Jam Youtube. I can’t believe I use to fine that vulgar stuff amusing. Alhamduillah my children were not in the room, but I was embarrassed in front of my Lord and immediately closed it. Astaufirallah.
K-Dude,
I guess that’s cause you don’t go waaaaaaaaaaay back. Isaac Hayes was an icon and that’s what made Chef so hilarious. But he was definitely more than that or scientology. Let’s take it back to Hot Buttered Soul.
[...] Links 8/10/08 10Aug08 UPDATED 8/11 - Via Tariq (why am I always behind on the news?): Issac Hayes also died this weekend. [...]
First it was Bernie Mac, now Issac.
He was the reason why I loved SHAFT. That is why I also loved the 70’s decade. He is a one of a kind.I do not think there will be another singer who will be able to do his “D( fill in the blank) right!” slogan like he did.
Oh, my. I don’t know how much more I can take. Bernie and now Isaac? It will do me good if I just stay away from TV, PC, and any other media.
Margari,
I was familiar with some of his stuff, and apparently I didn’t even know that I was familiar with even more of this stuff. I never realised that he wrote a lot of songs for Sam and Dave.
………I was having a good day.
Ike, Black Musa
- The Baaaad Muthashutyomouth - Being a Memphian this is really hard. I loved Ike’s music. You could put on an Isaac Hayes song, take a nap, wake up and the same song would still be on.
He was the first guy to be bold enough to put 15, 17, and sometimes 20 minute songs on an album. Hot Buttered Soul had only 4 or 5 songs on it but it ran over an hour. If you want to know what real music is, listen to the full version of Ike’s ‘69 “Walk on by”…
Another great one gone..
Hello there!
Thank you for remembering Isaac Hayes….he was a different kind of brotha…he was pro-black at a time when black men were trying to be Barry “the good black” Obama in order to reach their goals in life…and he was a man’s man…he was not afraid to portray a different type of black masculinity…
People think Michael Jordan was fashionable with his bald head look…please…Isaac was rocking a bald head with his sexy self when Michael was still in diapers! *LOL*
Thank you for remembering a unique man…his life journey was not in vein…he will be remembered with much respect by millions…
Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
