The Big Speech

I must admit that Barack Obama gave a pretty good speech last night and I felt that the entire lead up presentation was well done. Over the past few weeks, he seemed to be stumbling, but he responded very well (even responded to the egotism charges so strongly that I think he may have put it to an end) and affirmed that in many ways he represents the embodiment of the American values of hard work and overcoming overwhelming odds to make it. That is definitely the strength of his message. I am not a big fan of his, but I don’t think many people will deny these things and I will vote for him because I feel that the message it sends the world is very strong - and inspiring. Now to see how he does in the debates.

Meanwhile, it looks like McCain will choose Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty errr maybe Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate.

I don’t do gay displays of emotion buy their emotional almost made me cry.

  2. I missed it–I was studying for vet med test. I keep hearing how good it was, and I’m sure it was but I’d like to judge for myself. Where can I see it again?

  3. Initally, I was worried that the second faze of the DNC was going to be as so-so as the first, but I was really, really impressed by what I seen. I looked at bits and pieces of it, but I as more impressed by these last set of speakers. I liked most of them, but Bill Richardson and Obama’s speech was awesome. I guess guys behind the DNC were trying to save the best for last.

  4. @indigoblu

This blog shows the biography that they showed before his speech as well as his whole speech.

  5. I liked it moreso for its historical value. He looked like a celebrity yet presidential at the same time, which was good.

I would have liked for him to have been slightly more specific on some of the policies that he would push instead of the family history and pontification.

He made no mention of his African grandmother and the accomplishments of the other half of his family. I guess that wouldn’t have played very well with “mainstream” America.

  6. ASA,

@ Dawud, I think he was very specific on some of the policies that he would push given the circumstances of the speech.

You are right about mentioning the “other” side of his family. They always talk about that the American people don’t “know” the Obamas, so I’m sure he wanted to give something all people could connect with. I think it was a well constructed speech and very effective at setting the stage for a battle against McCain. I really appreciate Obama’s spirit for service and he’s proven that he’s tough and will stand up for the values that he believes in.

  7. Barack was abandoned by his father and did not know his Kenyan family. How could he talk about people he did not know? The point in talking about his family was to speak on how they shaped his values. It would not have fit to throw them in

  8. That’s like me talking about my half brother and his mother. I don’t really know him…have no desire to know her and the circumstances of how I even have a half brother are not exemplary. So why would I be disingenuous and give a speech about family and include them?

  9. I’m inspired brothers and sisters!

    : )

  10. Thanks so much legacy.

  11. Who’s Sarah Palin?

  12. Ok Ok OK

Even I have to admit that Obama’s speech was a great speech it was as populist and as centrist of a speech I’ve heard in American politics, his selection of Biden masterful.

In fact it has caused Mccain to blink, I thought that Mccain would ride the whole “you can’t trust him, lack of experince” thing to the end, but no he’s selected a VP no foreign policy experience who’s currently under investigation LOL

Actually until this speech the reps were out campaigning the dems, and providing the middle age poor to middle class white male, the facade (elite, unpatriotic, inexperinced) to continue to support Mccain despite the fact his policies are against their own best interest. there was no way the reps can run on their record and win this election, so they went the tried and true American way “make em affraid of the Black guy” route.

Hey I don’t have a horse in this race but Mccain has shown he’s weak, and shouldn’t win, however this is still America.

And while Obama will still win the black vote and many educated whites and the really poor whites in the hood. He will lose the total women vote (read the Ferrarro crowd ) and he will still lose to those who can’t quiet wrap their minds around a Black leading America, though his policies would help them.

this morning on the way to work I stoped at a gas where there was I white man 40ish looking dishelved hair in need of a shampoo, returning bootles telling the Muslim behind the lottery machine that he shouldn’t vote for Obama because if he get’s in everything going to be messed up. need I say more

  13. oh did mention this guy was riding a bycicle in the rain returning bottles to a gas station LOL

  14. I saw a part of speech and it was pretty good but it wasn’t specific as I would have liked it to be. We pretty much know why and what Obama would do in future but how would achieve these things is still unspecified.

Sarah Palin I think was a great choice for Mccain. I think it may help him a little especially with those hardcore Hillary fanatics who just can’t acept Hillary’s lost. I don’t know much about her or her voting record but she seems like she’ll make a good vp (if McCain wins, God Forbid).

    And Redwan stop blockd**king!

Post a real comment or don’t post at all. There’s adab in blogging as well Akh. You can promote your blog but you have leave a real comment as well. You have to give as well as take.

  15. I thought he delivered quite well, but I didn’t find the speech that impressive. Every now and then he delved into specifics, which probably aren’t appropriate considering the occasion (although this is one of those few times where all eyes are on him). There was quite a lot of talk about McCain. This is the kind of thing I’ve been faulting McCain on (why run a campaign based on the other guy, it gives him too much credit).

Although I suppose that if he was too rhetorical, it might come off as cliched.

    @ Hamza

I’ve made the same comments to Redwan, no luck so far, not sure he understands how blogging works.

  16. Shayla,
Predictable…predictable. Johnny was just predictable. Anyway, After that big DNC party that was thrown for Obama, he just wanted to make some history and have a grand ol’party for himself( I must admit, this was the second time that I watched the DNC. The first I watched about when Bill Clinton was running for office).Anyway ,about Sarah? She was the governor of Alaska. She was also a pioneer in her own right by becoming her state first woman governor.

I’m not a Republican, but I think that if he was going to pick a woman VP, he should have picked a more known and experienced individual . I find it funny how McCain picked on Obama for not having a lot of political/ military experience, but this woman has none herself. As a matter of fact, she has barely completed a term as governor! It has nothing to with her sex because, as I said, there are women Republican and Democratic, who could have made a better VP choice. If Obama critics say that our government will be screwed because of him, it going to be 20 times screwed with Palin in there.

  17. I’ve told my friends before, I’m not sold on Obama yet. He’s given me a check, but I refuse to cash it until I’m sure there’s money in his account.

    That’s an analogy folks.

But, what other choice do I have? I can stay home and not vote like I did the past 2 elections. Or I can vote for McCain (almost as bad as committing suicide).

In the end, as a Muslim my personal views are more in line with Republican so-called conservative values. But those are some war-mongering $#@%& so I will never vote for them. Not to mention a good part of their base would love to see Islam wiped off the face of the earth.

    But I digress.

  18. I think the speech was warm and heartfelt—I really enjoyed it. Every now and again he would speak a phrase that spoke such simple truth in the most complex iof ssues that it gave me Goosebumps. He seems to possess a beautiful spirit.

    Abu:

Many people say, at least with McCain, you know what you are getting (dearth)—I say and with McCain you know what you

  19. “Hamza 21,:
I saw a part of speech and it was pretty good but it wasn

  20. I thought his speech was average in it its delivery but above average in its content. He made the points he needed to make and undercut some of McCain’s arguments against him.

On another note, I like McCain’s foreign policy credentials and his stance on the war. I am still undecided. I have been a Republican for 20 years so I usually vote Republican. However, I am impressed by Obama’s demeanor and temperment.

His ideas are standard liberalism with a few tweeks.

As a muslim I am typically a social conservative so that is why the Republican party has always been attractive to me.
