On the Bailout Vote
Posted on September 30th, 2008 by Tariq Nelson
Keith Ellison voted ‘yes’. His rationale for doing so was in Sunday’s Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Conversely, Andre Carson voted ‘no’
The issue is not cut and dry. Democrats and Republicans fell on both sides. According to this article, the entire housing market is inflated and we need a correction
How’d your Representative vote?

[...] Everyone seems to be split on this financial bailout. Democrats and Republicans voted on both sides. Even Congress’ two Muslim representatives were split on the issue [...]
At least 11 of my congresspeople from state opposed the bailout while 2 supported it. My congressman, Tom Price voted against it. I was on the side of the naysayers. Bush wanted to rush this thing without thinking just like he did with the war and it’s costing us. I have a very strange feeling that if Bush would have been successful at getting this bill passed it would have been much of the same.
Bush has a tendency of wanting to blackmail people into getting the job done.No doubt that the economy needs help. Far as Bush, I smell a rat. I don’t think that this bailout would have been about the American people. I believe that a better solution can be sought than what Bush initially proposed. the plan needs to be thoroughly worked out before Congress passes such a bill .In spite of the fiasco, I hoping for the best.
My rep, Hon. John Conyers (D-MI), voted AGAINST it as he should have.
There weren’t enough safeguards in the bill against corruption. As I heard one pundit on Democracy Now say, it would be the fiscal “Patriot Act” of our nation.
My reps Jackson-Lee and Al Green (D-TX) voted against. As a business and finance major, I have seen the results of the Enron calapse and the subsequent Sarbanes Oxlely Act that came out of it. Althought it was some bad, it was very much needed. As Dawud stated there werent enough safeguards in place. It would have been great if our President would have jumped to the aid of the homeowners the way he does for big business. Now that it affects their pockets, it is a crisis. However it is important to note that most Republicans voted against the bill. They may have voted against it because they dont like Big GVMT.
John Lewis (D-GA) voted against the bill along with a few others.
Assalaam aleikum to all my Brothers and Sisters. May the blessings of Ramadan continue and grow ’till the next Ramadan.
DISCLAIMER:
Those who know me know I have never been the type of person who minces her words, and that I’m too old to start now. One of the cardinal rules in my life is that people have the right to know where they stand with me. However this occassion, guess what, is not going to be any different. The situation has way too much fabric to work on”. So here I go:
The fact that my father was a Doctor in Economy does not give me any insight or any extra knowledge on that topic. I don’t have it, and I’m not going to pretend I do. With that being said, I must express my disgust and repugnance for all those that voted for the so called “bailout”. Yes Mr. Ellison, it includes you! There are three questions, albeit rethorical ones, that beg to be asked:
1. How stupid do you politicians think the people of this country are?
2. Did you really thought that we were going to buy the crap on the economy death if the “bailout” project didn’t pass?
3. Did you forget who send you to Washington, who you work for and who you really have to answer to?
To ask us the tax payers to fetch the bill for wall street greed ride is as unfair as blaming all Muslims for 9/11. When these greed whores (I told you I don’t mince words) were giving mortgages for a $750,000 house to a brand new Target cashier without checking credit, criminal or job backgrounds; no one called us tax payers to share in the money raking party. Now that these firms have gone the way of the Flintstones, you want us to pay the bill; whentheir CEOs are leaving with more money than what each firm needs to get out of the coffin?
Mr. Ellison if the above expression of rage is not enough, here is what I think of your reasons to vote for this aberration:
“We cannot let Wall Street fail,…”
YES, WE CAN (no pun intended), IT WILL NOT BE THE FIRST TIME, AND IT SURELY WON’T BE THE LAST.
“because if we do, Main Street fails as well.”
REALLY? I HAVE NEWS FOR YOU MR. ELLISON; WE,THE WORKERS OF THIS COUNTRY (the “main street” moniker is beyond unintelligent), ARE ALREADY BROKE.
“Credit markets are already frozen.”
OK, THE DAMAGE IS ALREADY DONE. SO WHATS THE POINT ON THIS?
“If this plan fails, banks restrict lending, unemployment soars…”
PLEASE ALLOW ME TO APOLOGIZE FOR NOT NOTIFYING YOU AHEAD OF TIME. IT IS MY FAULT YOU DIDN’T KNOW BANKS RESTRICTED LENDING LONG TIME AGO, AND UNEMPLOYMENT HAS ALREADY BEEN SOARING FOR ALMOST EIGHT YEARS. WHEN I FOUND THIS OUT, I SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU RIGHT AWAY . AGAIN, I’M SORRY.
“…credit cards will become useless and cash will become the king of the economy.”
I THOUGHT THAT’S HOW IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE. OMG,WAS I THAT WRONG? CANNOT BE, LET ME GO AND CHECK MY LIFE MANUALS, HAVEN’T YOU HEARD OF THEM? THEY’RE CALLED THE QUR’AN AND THE SUNNAH.
“We are on the precipice of economic disaster rivaling the Great Depression.”
REALLY? DIDN’T WE SURVIVE THE DEPRESSION? AND WHAT IS GREAT ABOUT THIS DEPRESSION; THAT WE FINALLY WILL HAVE TO FACE THE FACT THAT WE HAVE BEEN LIVING LIES? FACE THE FACT THAT WE ARE NOT THE RICHEST AND MOST POWERFUL COUNTRY IN THE WORLD? LEARN THAT WE ACTUALLY OWE THE PIECE OF ANATOMY WE USE FOR SEATING TO THE CHINESE? BECAUSE SINCE THE FIRST BOOBOO AFTER 2000, THE CHINESE ARE THE ONES PAYING FOR THE PARTY.
Well, I guess we have really made a reality the saying of “this is a FREE country”, because it is really free to all thos ceos.
Very interesting article, as are some of your other posts. I have bookmarked your great site for future visits.
