Palin vs Biden

Update: Palin misstated McCain’s position on Homeowner’s Protection

I found Governor Palin’s performance to be an embarrassment. She refused to answer any questions and stuck strictly to the canned answers and talking points no matter what the question. Biden on the other hand was very Presidential, knowledgeable and actually answered the questions.

Of couse the right-wing loved her performance and thought that she did well because she got in a lot of ‘zingers’. That is what they love. Plus she got in one on Gwen Ifill when she flatly stated that she would not answer her questions. I know that Palin’s fans LOVED that one. They were going to say that she “rocked” no matter how she did.

I can’t see how any fair person actually thought that this woman’s performance was in any way good.

CBS Poll: 46% say Biden won the debate; 21% Palin; 33% tie

CNN scored it Biden: 51%; Palin 36%

Exactly an hour into the debate, Joe Biden began an answer by saying, “Facts matter, Gwen.”

To him, maybe. To Sarah Palin, maybe not. The pattern, so far, has been one of Biden presenting facts and Palin countering with… saying stuff. Sometimes she throws in a fact, but mostly she seems to be offering a string of approximate policy positions, encomiums to the American spirit, disputed interpretations of Barack Obama’s record and anecdotes from Alaska.

Ezra Klein:

Palin turned in a genuinely competent performance, and Biden turned in a superlative one. His performance tonight was the best I’ve seen from any candidate in this election, including the primaries. Just a superb job. I’m a bad barometer for middle America, but tonight seemed a clear win for him and his ticket.

  1. Biden is a boob! And though he “appears” quite knowledgeable, go back and check the facts. He answered 11 questions with factually wrong answers…not inaccurate, not questionable, but plain WRONG. I give him the benefit of the doubt, hes was not lying–he’s just an idiot.

  2. @ Morris

How many questions did Palin actually answer? How did it look that she would answer the question with something TOTALLY unrelated?

  3. Tariq,Here lately you have had a lock on Obama’s jock like a pitbull. So as far as being fair is concerned you seem to be as fair & balanced as Fox news lately.

  4. @ Byron

No, I’m just calling it like I see it. Palin is pathetic

  5. Morris, can you please link us?

I thought Joe Biden did good but it was quite obvious by his face that he knew it was stupid to debate a woman who throws cheap shots and refuses to answer questions. What I hate about Palin is her arrogance. How evil must she be to accept a position that she knows she isn’t suitable for. Allahul Musta’an.

  7. Byron, Tariq’s blog is not a news agency. If you want some fair and balanced info about the candidates maybe you should go read an actual newspaper or something

Sarah Palin is an idiot which the debate amply demonstrated tonight. The fact that people were cheering her performance tonight because she was only somewhat pathetic rather than completely pathetic is in and of itself completely pathetic.

Why people want a medicore/stupid vp or prez just because “she/he is just like me” is really beyond my comprehension at this point.

  8. Morris,
Those questions were accurate and related. Since she was a journalist, she should known how to relate to it. She’s the one who went off the subject, especially when she kept talking about Israel and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad( for somebody to bring up his name like she has , she must have a thing for him), which was irrelevant to the debate.

She was better with this one, but she wasn’t fantastic. A great speaker/debater are pretty consistent with their speeches. She started off fairly well, but in throughout the debate, she was on and off and repetitive with her usage of the “Maverick” word( I thought that Joe got sick of it when he hurried and said that McCain wasn’t one.) .She just seemed unnatural . It’s like you knew somebody told her what to say and she didn’t know how to make it look like her own words.I’m no journalist or communications expert, but I’ve known a couple of communications/ English professors who would have deducted many points for that speech/debate because of it. The best audience are the common people. So far, some of them even thought that she didn’t stick on the topic. I didn’t exactly hear them get very hyped about her speech.

Joe was good. He was consistent, natural and made himself look credible. I liked the way, he kept using sources, quotes to make himself look credible( In all fairness, again NBC news said that both had inconsistencies with a couple of their sources. It wasn’t just Joe Biden). That was something that Sarah barely did with her debate. That was why I found Joe to be more credible. It doesn’t take a genius to know that that her debating was checkered.

  9. As a woman, I had the impression that Palin spent most of her effort on trying to flirt with the camera. She couldn’t stop smiling and using those wink and smile gestures. I was thinking, man, she is trying to get all the men out there to think she is cute. Very Gidget-esque, she was. It was hard to watch. I loved it when Biden said McCain wasn’t a maverick….EVERYONE was sick of that word by that point.

Anyways, to sum up my thoughts on her….she was playing too cutesy to win votes. Nauseating!

  10. Palin won!!

No she didn’t win the debate she won public oppinion, she was becoming dangerously close to people believing she was an idiot, I’m not talking in the usual partisan name calling way, literally a number of people on both sides were begining to think she was stupid. It’s one thing to not be informed it’s quiet another to be stupid.

Simply because the bar was set so low for her, all she had to do was to get through without making a major blunder. Her whole debate was scripted

So she was able to prove she could memorise and that was her win.(even though she still foolishly had the nerve to mention free market in the mist of the house voting for a 700 handout/welfare for the financial market LOL)

Also this was not a debate this was more like a infomercial, how crazy was it the number of times she responded to a question with answer that had nothing to do with the question (LOL I can already imagine the SNL skits, imagines Max from living single running around saying “ride the maverick” LOL)

even in high school i would have gotten a failing grade if had tried the method of arguementation she tried to pass off. bottom line she did enough to keep the status quo, though the GOP can not win on a single substantive issue they still have the “big joker” that is identity politics on their side, America as a whole hasn’t had enough pain for them to elect a Black guy.

Although I thought we would had that “nation security alert” by now

  11. Call me an elitist, but until she can pronounce the word nuclear properly, I can’t take her seriously. ITS NUCLEAR NOT NUCULAR FOR F$%KS SAKE!

  12. As I commented in Tariq’s other post ” Palin Debate Flow Chart” I don’t believe she is as dumb as people have believed. She chose apearing dumb and likable over evasive and untrustworthy.

One thing I hated about this debate was all the Israeli posturing. I couldn’t believe Palin even stated she would like the US embassy to be in Jerusalem. Which unofficially it is already, sort of. By stated that, which many in news missed the subtext, she is saying she believes Israel and not Palestinians have a right to ALL of Jerusalem. She also is hinting that John McCain as president would enforce the Jerusalem embassy act of 1995, which both Clinton & Bush have avoided doing.

Israel is a dying nation. The Palestinians counting residents of the West bank and Gaza will be the majority as early as 2015 and and Israeli Arabs will be the majority of Israel by 2035. You can’t have a Jewish state if the majority of the country is not Jewish. This something politicians need to think about while pandering to Jewish vote.

  13. Palin winked and flirted too much while speaking, and smiled too much (sticking her tongue in between her teeth…UGH!) while Biden was speaking. I’m glad the cameras didn’t keep those angles too long while she did that.

Palin also was poor at answering direct questions. She beat around the bush (no pun intended), while suggesting that she was talking straight to the American people. She was outright disrespectful to the moderator.

Palin also has an awful pattern of speech, and those “folksy” comments should have been kept to a minimum.

Palin is not ready. I would be so afraid if she ended up in Washington, in ANY capacity.

  14. As-Salaamu ‘alaikum,

It sounds like parts of the American right-wing media will say that Palin won regardless of what she actually said or did - all she has to do is get a few well-chosen put-downs in, much like Bush’s remark about inventing the internet in 2000. It reminds me of a letter I once read in a British music magazine which had given top marks to a mediocre record by a “cool” artist, and the letter asked that if this artist urinated in a bucket and recorded it, would they give that five stars? I think some people would do the same for whoever the Republican candidate was.
