Yes history is still being written, BUT this time it’s not going to have the usual perspective of the average white male. At least this TIME the construction of history will include the perspective of minorities (such as woman and African Americans) will be HEARD. How we view history and understand changes with time is essential to our progress. Now, we refuse to be excluded.
By viewing history through our eyes, hopely we will question every past tradition that we take for granted and examine what purpose some of them serve .
Investigating history will provide insight into the consideration of our needs and our situation.
Zenobia - the more things apparently change, the more they stay the same.
If the time of the ‘white males’ is over, will Obama’s ascendancy to the Oval office signal a shift from the existing policies that cement and perpetuate white male hegemony throughout the world?
If you read that reference I posted on this comment-thread earlier (ie. http://wsws.org/articles/2008/nov2008/obam-n17.shtml - ”The black “insiders” and the Obama administration by Lawrence Porter”), I think you’d re-evaulate your contentions. These investigative reports are just the tip of the iceberg.
You’re right, we should learn our history. The fact that so many have refused to learn from history’s lessons, have doomed us to a collective failure.
Witness the fate of the Jews and Israel today. Historically they were victims of a vicious Holocaust, waged against them at the hands of the Nazis. Now the sons and daughters of those victims, are the new ‘masters’ toward hapless Palestinians.
Do not hold such gullible hope, in a system which gives us the ILLUSION of choice in presidential elections. Obama has won, not because history determined it was time to let a black man lead.
He won because he was allowed to win.
Let us shed our naivete, and not be so taken in by hyperbole, in these troubling times.
Don’t be mistaken Abu Dharr, it’s not gullible hope that I hold. Please read carefully, I never stated “the time of the white man is over”, I wrote This time we are going to have different perspectives available.
I hope the “collective failure” you mention also includes the present day genocide in Darfur, their fate is even more unfortunate then the Palestinians which are constantly mentioned by many Arabs and Muslims. “The new masters towards” Darfurians are other Muslims, your right, we should learn our history. But for many, external criticism is much easier than internal criticism.
The Obama ascendancy to the Oval office is NOT the only thing that signals a shift (even if it’s a slight one) from the white male hegemony. On the side, I’m also hoping there is going to be a shift in the perpetuation of ARAB male hegemony throughout the Muslim world but (for some that’s a much harder naivete to shed).
In these FAST times, there’s the likelihood of success, a chance that something desirable (change) will happen and IS* possible.
Assalaamu a’laikum,
Exactly what are we ‘progressing’ towards?
The story is still being written
Yes, apparently it is being written. But not by the usual suspects. See this reference:

Yep! We’ve come a long way.
