Michael Steele to Seek RNC Leadership

…and Newt Gingrich is reported to be backing him. He will probably win as the Republicans don’t plan to be outdone on the diversity front. Look for the Republicans to also put Bobby Jindal out front as well. The Limbaugh/Hannity wing will resist, but they will be dragged along kicking and screaming.

Michael Steele, former lieutenant governor of Maryland, has decided to run for the chairmanship of the Republican National Committee and is in talks with Newt Gingrich to win the former House speaker’s endorsement, FOX News learned Tuesday.

Steele declined to comment, but a source close to the situation said Steele would announce his candidacy as early as Thursday.

In a statement issued by the former House speaker, Gingrich said he was not interested in seeking the post of Republican Party chairman.

“A number of people have asked me to consider running for Republican National Committee chair. They have been very flattering, and I am very honored by their support,” he said.

“However, my job as an American first is to develop a tri-partisan approach to developing solutions for the challenges we face. I use the word tri-partisan to designate the concept of attracting Democrats, Republicans, and independents to solutions that unify most Americans.”

Meanwhile, Steele is said to be hoping that his entry into the race will scare off other hopefuls, including current RNC chairman Mike Duncan.

Others vying for the post include Chip Saltsman, who chaired Mike Huckabee’s presidential campaign.

  1. I don’t know about Bobby Jindal or Michael Steele, but I just cannot see myself looking like anybody’s patsy for diversity.

I may sound harsh, but I’m sorry, The RNC primary goals in fishing those two is to use them for a diversity game and I wouldn’t play it. I just cannot see myself being in a party that had a centuries old reputation of excluding people like them. After looking at Obama’s campaign, I continue to realize that they aren’t worth my time. Nope! It wouldn’t matter if Michael would have been a Demo, his race and/or possible religion seems to be their deciding factor of who be classified as an American. The RNC just don’t get it.

While there is no political party that is 100 free of controversy, I just cannot see myself making an idiot of myself like that. After Obama, Overall the RNC continue to be an exclusive political party. God!there is nothing more embarrassing than a person being made fool out of it and in this case it’s Michael.. Michael is no Obama. He may be an AA, but I wouldn’t vote for him. He’s with the wrong party.

  2. I believe that the RNC is making the same mistake as it did when they completely accepted poorly-vetted Sarah Palin.

The RNC are doing that classic “Are you hip to my jive?”, move. Their disconnect from African Americans is severe. is throwing a “person of color” into the mix the answer? If they think so, it could be worse than Palin in response to Hillary’s supporters.

The majority White RNC appears to be unwilling to give any efforts to engage minorities. Picking a couple of token minorities is no substitute for a sincere connection.

I think that it’s a really bad move for the good ole boys to rely on the same old tricks.

  3. I know of Steele. I consider him a decent man who cares about black folk unlike most republicans & conservatives. However he is still extremely partisan. His appearance on Bill Mahers Real Time on HBO a month or two ago really showed his loyalty to the Republican agenda and ticket. Frankly he has drunk the kool-aid. As a mayor or possibly governor I would vote for him but as president ..no way.
