Post Election: Winners And Losers

I have compiled a list of people that will emerge as winners and losers in the aftermath of the Obama ascendancy to the Presidency

Winners:

(Updated) Community Organizers - How could I forget? After being lampooned by Palin and Guiliani, they were instrumental in this victory. The Obama “ground game” was awesome.

Bill Cosby -Vindication of his message of hard work

Colin Powell - Redemption

Dr. Howard Dean - Once a laughing stock, but his failed campaign in 2004 provided the framework for Barack’s successful run this year. “They were Apollo 11, and we were the Wright Brothers,” said Joe Trippi, the manager of Mr. Dean’s campaign. - The New York Times

Oprah Winfrey - Supported Barack from the beginning. Another symbol of the new black America

Harold Ford, Jr. - Said to be looking to make a run for Governor of Tennessee and position himself to be America’s second black President. Could also be in the Cabinet. Either way, Barack’s win paves the way.

The Black Middle Class - We are entering a new era in which it will be ‘cool’ to be smart and to achieve.

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. - That is, if he gets appointed to Barack’s Senate seat - which is very likely

The World - An America willing to cooperate with them

Losers

Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson, Sr and the old race hustling establishment - The gravy train has run dry. They will have to reinvent themselves or quietly go away.

Black Nationalists - A biting defeat for them. They were opposed to Barack Obama the entire time because his winning exposes their hustle as being bankrupt. The mythical “super black man” book sales and anti-American rhetoric will no longer pass the muster as black people love America now and they are finished. They always called for non participation in the system and now it is clear that they were wrong. Further to the fringe they go.

White Nationalists - Barack had millions of whites to vote for him. Still a lot of work to do - especially in rural America - but another nail in their coffin.

Anti-Intellectuals - It is cool to be smart. The GOP’s anti-intellectualism (i.e., disdain for the “elite”) is gone.

Anti-American Conspiracy Peddlers - Lot of overlap with the black Nationalists here. But they will look even more nutty now.

Anti-American Terrorist Lunatics - They have no longer have a foil to use as a recruiting tool. People overseas also feel good about America. Hopefully with time, they will be totally irrelevant. They are already irrelevant here in the US

Tavis Smiley - A long road back to relevance for Tavis. Once the darling of the black establishment, he now has no platform.

Can you think of any others?

  1. Re: Howard Dean. Not just his failed campaign of 2004, which helped to seed Obama’s current success, but that he was able to take control of the DNC afterwards and successfully implement the 50-state strategy. That, to me, is the real reason for the flipovers of states like Indiana and Virginia.

  2. Election night, when it was annouced that Obama had won, my wife started crying. She is not a political person, but she was deeply touched by the whole thing.

It gave me a chance to get a dig in about her applying to get her citizenship and having an active part to play in it all.

My boys, aged 2 and 3, where playing around whilst the rest of us were very serious watching the poll results come in. Obama’s victory means to many different people on so many different levels.

I just sat there looking at my bi-racial boys, born of an American parent and a foreign parent, and I knew this brave man was blazing a path that some day would allow my boys to follow.

It doesnt get any better than that people!

  3. Lol @ Tavis Smiley. Too funny!

  4. Wouldn’t yet count out the anti-intellectuals, there’s quite a few in the Republican party that think Palin is the future. God I hope they split and create their own party.

  5. Hello there!

This is a good list!! Oprah stepped up early and supported him!!

This entire experience is still merinating with so many millions of people….I wrote a post “After The Tears…America Faces Reality” because I believe that we have to continue to own up to all that is wrong in our country in order to produce lasting change.

Please feel welcome to drop by my blog and share your thoughts whenever you’d like!! (smiles)

    Peace, blessings and DUNAMIS!
    Lisa

  6. I know you already said black nationalist, but I’ll add specifically Louis Farrakhan and the NOI. They have believed in this man for so long and thought that he was the only black voice heard around the world. The problem was the world only heard him screaming and didn’t have a clue what he was talking about.

“Race Hustling Establishement”…Teach hard! rofl. I think they may have also been winners. They will wake up now. Barack did not play the race card not once! Did you see the way J.J cried? Those were sincre tears. I know he wanted to cut Obama’s balls earlier (not my words) but now he will be holding them! His tears told a whole story…I wish I could write about them but I would do it no justice.

Add the downtrodden blacks to the list too. In jest (but serious) people have been forwarding ‘proper etiquette’ for blacks now that there is a black President. I think blacks in general will behave more dignified. They may try a little harder not to embarraass Mr. President or ‘our people’ in front of the world.

  7. Good piece! Rev Jackson’s tears may have been sincere, but remember just 3 months ago he wanted to go Linda Bobbit on Barack Obama…

  8. @ JDsg

That is definitely true about the “50 state strategy”. Let’s not forget that his strategy won control of the House and Senate in 2006 for Democrats. He has vindicated himself in a big way.

    @ K-Dude

The way the “blue blood” educated Republicans are attacking the anti-intellectuals (Wasilla Hillbillies) is funny

    @ ummadam

The NOI are DEFINITE losers in this. No more myth peddling and anti-American rhetoric. But they are not the only ones

  9. Harold Ford - I cannot see him as a winner. I think he comes from a vastly different background than Obama including his political family background and also his message. No doubt that he will probably benefit from Barack’s win.

  10. ASA

Winners list should include our Muslim Congressmen

Keith Ellison & Andre Carson. They both won their re-election bids by large margins.

  11. I actually kept saying throughout this whole thing that for once, I had to give Al Sharpton credit…unlike Jesse, and frankly, Rev. Wright, he did not once get in front of a camera and try to make Obama’s candidacy shine light on him. Even for a minute.

I had to give him credit for that.

  12. White Nationalists such as skin heads will use the victory for recruitment purposes.

They are losers, but will get a short term boost.

  13. Salaam Tariq

Great list, it really made me chuckle. But please, don’t dog Tavis too much…some of us still like him.

As a side note, I just wanted to thank you for keeping us informed of all the political goings on, pre election. Your blog was a great resource for a busy momma with 3 kids and no access to cable. Just wanted you to know that it was all greatly appreciated. The Olbermann vids were a great way to start my day!

  14. I have always thought that Jesse Jackson was all mouth and nothing else. It’s about show for him

McCain/Palin displayed a lot of that in this campaign along with a lack of class. No , they can’t stop the opinions of their supporters, but they ( especially Sarah) never showed great character in it. Sarah really didn’t show much intellectualism or grace during the campaign.

Far as Colin Powell, I’ve always admired him. He’s Republican, but also a realist. He was a neutral person. His party talks about values and hard work, but I like HIS idea of it.Very interesting guy. He proves that being a conservative doesn’t mean that he has to be mean and exclusive to people. If I were a Republican, He would be high on my list on candidates that I would vote for.

  15. Just a few comments.

    BLACK NATIONALIST

Granted i am NOT a black nationalist (BN), but the general criticicism that the BN is not essentially wrong: America is a DIRTY place doing a lot of DIRTY DEEDS. Getting assimilated (that is co-opted) into the American system should not be seen as an accomplishment. Are y’all forgetting there are ONE MILLION BLACK MEN IN JAIL? Or that black American (kaafirs) have become an almost totally bastardized group of people? Or that the black culture has come to be dominated by women? I’m like Daud on this issue… i could care more–but i don’t–unless these people want to get down with the Shahadah. It should be clear, however, that as self-destructive as these black kaafirs are, they are also being goaded on by this nasty globalist corporate system that has promoted these vile trends and made black popular culture synoymous with drug slingin’, pimpin’ and strippin.

Furthermore, it is America that is occupying two Muslim countries. America gives complete support to the Zionist control of the third most holy city in Islam. And it is America–that is, the military/propaganda wing of the globalists–that is assaulting Islam and Islamic values ALL OVER THE EARTH. The black nationalist would pretty much agree with us (Muslims) on this issue. I seriously doubt that Malcolm X would have turned a blind eye to American foreign policy because the house negroes can snuggle up a little more to the powers that be.

    WHITE NATIONALISTS (WN)

I think they are winners in this as well. I haven’t been on Stormfront since the election, but i am confident that this drives home their main point: the Frankfurt School and multiculturalists (code words for the Jewish elite) have declared an “openly covert” war on the white race. The election will serve as a recruiting tool for the WN–more white folks are going to realize that SOMETHING IS GOING ON HERE! And since the WN are closer to the truth than what is being shoveled down folks’ throats by the mainstream media, it makes it easier for them to persuade others to their cause.

    Conspiracy Theorists (CT)

Again like the BN/WN, they have enough sense know that things aren’t what they seem. Is it a “conspiracy” that the US government invaded Iraq on false pretenses so that it could control the oil fields, establish military bases, impose the globalist culture upon the population, and eliminate any (major) threat to Israel? What about Afghanistan and the opium trade? What about Bin Laden and the CIA? Doesn’t the official story about 9/11 just seem fishy… like the collapse of Building 7? WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD SOMEONE THINK THAT THOSE WHO ARE BENT ON GLOBAL CONTROL would tell the truth in the corporate dominated mainstream media to the dumbed downed serf/slave populace?

From an ISLAMIC PERSPECTIVE, we know that things are going to GET INCREASINGLY WORSE. This is what THE PROPHET SAID. We see MANY of the minor signs of Judgment Day all around us (spread of fornication/disease, mass killing, usury, naked women walking about, prevalence of alcohol, the CAPITULATION of the Muslim masses to the kuffaar, the Muslims imitating the Jews and Christians, treachery will be common amongst the rulers, Muslims will be without a state (governed by Islam), destitute animal herders competing in building tall structures, the daughters dominating their mothers… IGNORANCE OF THE DEEN AMONGST MUSLIMS, etc.). We know–FROM WHAT THE PROPHET SAID–that the Christians, and the Jews, in particular, would plot the (attempted) destruction of the Deen. And we know that before the Dajjal comes, there will be, in essence, a global welcoming committe–a system–that will make it easier for him to spread his fitnah upon the earth. This isn’t conspiracy theory–THIS IS WHAT PROPHET MUHAMMAD (sallallahu `alayhi wa sallam) TAUGHT.

The greater danger (as opposed to McCain) in Barrack Hussein’s election is that many people are going to be lulled into a stupor and think that things are really going to change. The power structure is going to remain. The same super-elite families and global corporations will still dominate affairs. They will further concentrate power by more intrusion into people’s lives (cameras everywhere, surveillance, tracking transactions, DNA banks, sticking micro-chips in kids, etc.), and the corporate dominated media will continue to run its psy-ops on the people. I find it hard to grasp that Muslims are falling for this same ole game they’ve been running for generations. Folks DON’T BE FOOLED–SHAYTAN IS A NASTY #%$*–and he’s full of deception.

  16. I wouldn’t rule the conspiracy peddlers just yet, even before the election a white co-worker with a straight face told me that the anti-christ would have a one world government and be love all over the world because the people would be fooled. He said that it was a concern since Obama was liked everywhere. LOL

So when I stopped laughing right in his face I asked did he consider Obama the anti-christ he said he didn’t know he was only telling me one of the signs

    LOL

conspiracy peddlers are a resourceful group that can refine any event

  17. Speaking of winners…keep an eye on Newark Mayor Cory Booker

  18. Black Nationalists If it wasn’t for black nationalist there would be no President Obama.

Grow up and read some history.

  19. Losers = Muslims who are “newly inspired” and have “hope” and “honor” since Obama’s election.

I am amazed at how the Muslims here race as if they’re in a drunken stupor to do away with the foundation of every relationship the Muslims have: al walaa wal baraa’. Do you have love for Obama and allegiance to him because he is black, and is that based on the Book of Allaah and the Prophetic Sunnah? If not, than you are loving for other than Allaah’s sake, your loyalties are misplaced, and your Deen could be trouble.

How can Muslims claim to have acquired a new sense of “hope” from other than Allaah!?! Is it because a half kenyan, half white kafr got elected president!?! For all we know Obama could even be an apostate. You all have Hope in what? It can’t be a new Hope to obtain honor as an african american in America, which lurks behind your statements, because the Muslim knows his honor can only come from Allaah!!!

35:10 Whosoever desires honour, power and glory then to Allâh belong all honour, power and glory..”

4:139 Those who take disbelievers for Auliyâ’ (protectors or helpers or friends) instead of believers, do they seek honour, power and glory with them? Verily, then to Allâh belongs all honour, power and glory…”

Subhanallaah, Muslims!!! Our HOPE is our hope to see Allaah, our hope to be forgiven for our sins, our hope is to enter Jenna and saved from the Fire, our hope is that Allaah answers our du’a’. Hope is AN ACT OF WORSHIP, and to have it in other than Allaah could be shirk!!!

I am amazed as well as deeply saddened by you all’s statements about this election. Allaahu Must’aan!!!!!!!!

  20. I agree with Daud (Bra. I haven’t read u say anythig other than the truth but u got Malcolm X syndrome…making your chicken coming home to roost comments…bad timing). not just about the African American Muslims but those from the Muslim world who are now like, ” change!” I fear they will change so much they’ll wake up not Muslim!

  21. As Muslims, our honor comes from being guided to Islaam, and then from our ability to obey Allaah’s commands and prohibitions.

Umar ibn Khattab (radiyyallaahu an) said in a well-known hadith,

“Our honor comes from Islaam, and whoever seeks honor from anything other than it will be humiliated”!!!!!!

  22. @ Tariq

“…heading into a new era in which it is “cool” to be smart and achieve…”!?!

What the hell are you talking about!?! Do you think just because Obama is the President, that hordes of criminal minded, worthless, kafr, niggas standing around in the hoods of america are now going to rush to fill out college applications? If you talk to these knuckleheads you will find that what we consider being “smart” and “achievement”, ain’t even on their radar screens. In fact you will find them believing that your definition of being “smart” and “achieving” is “corny”; and worst of all, they believe it’s acting “white”. The mere election of a black president ain’t going to change that mentality. The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu alayhi wa salam)–who did not speak of his own desires; he spoke from Revelation, said that each succeeding generation will be worse, not better as you imply.

  23. @ Daud

No, there will not be “hordes” of criminal minded people headed off to college, but the future generation is much more promising.

I think the “acting white” thing will eventually (not immediately) die off. You will see more and more black children inspired to achieve and do better as we change this culture of failure.

It will take the actions of all of us and not just Obama. I am doing my part by doing my best to teach my sons to work hard, to be relentless, to kick tail in their studies and to achieve at the highest levels. I do my own part each and every day when I spread this message to others as well in every day life.

I can only speak on an anecdotal level, but I have seen more and more people speak of doing better this past year.

  24. @ Madeupname

Black Nationalists were teaching blacks to reject voting, running for office and being part of the system. They have failed once and for all. Many of them were even supporting McCain because they feared that it would cause blacks to love America - which is what is happening

  25. Salaam’Alaikum,

    Brother Tariq,

You’re forgetting the most important winner of all: people like you, and me who are registered voters, and “vote early and often”. (at least I do)

EVERY American that voted is a winner. We are all winners regardless of our party affiliation because we made the decision to participate in our own democracy. The Bush administration or my favorite” radical rogue regime” taught me that if you don’t participate in the process you will get run the heck over—all the while being told “the fundamentals of such and such are sound.”

This republican administration claims to practice “small government” but all of their major legislative acts such as the Patriot Act are contrary to the inherent belief that government is a necessary evil: in this case it became evil.

I did NOT vote for Obama because his skin color is black/brown. I also did not vote for my Libertarian nominee for this reason: I believe in the SANCTITY OF HUMAN LIFE for (((ALL))) people in (((ALL))) situations!! I’m fed up with being ruled by hate mongers, war mongers, and cultists. Enough is enough. As a parent, I’m terrified of the possibility of having my child—the love of my life—drafted for an unnecessary, unjust, and unreasonable war.

I don’t care if Obama would have been Hispanic, Asian, Indian, Arab, or an Alien from outer space.

Let us not forget that it was the REGISTERED VOTERS who are the winners because we all had enough COURAGE, enough INETRIGTY, and most importantly enough COMMON SENSE to understand we must preserve: our civil liberties; our constitution; our wealth; and our international ties no matter how shattered, ragged, and wearied all of the above have become.

I could care less about any of the folks mentioned on this list unless or until they honorably, dutifully, and peacefully represent their constituency to the best of their skills, and abilities.

I have a suggestion: you appear to be a well vetted and respected individual in the IMM community: you should add any so called “scholar” (not by name of course) that preaches “it’s harram to vote.”

If anybody on this earth has not learned the danger of dropping out of the political process may the Almighty truly, truly, guide them.

  26. Salaam Umm Adam,

I saw a question you asked in another thread on this blog, and it concerned me that you felt you needed permission to feel the way you wanted to feel about why you did or didn’t vote for Obama.

I’m just a person in cyber space, my opinion, may be worthless, but if you felt proud of Obama because he is black—in that colorism didn’t deter him from success, that’s your prerogative and only the Almighty knows what is in our heart.

I was really disturbed by how quick you were “policed” or “checked” by another Muslim on this blog.

I think that behavior is cultish, and you’re a grown woman. You have a right to feel what ever you want to feel, and you are not obligated to explain or justify those feelings to ANY Muslim of ANY ethnicity.

If an Arab would have won, I’m 110% sure; one Arab in our universe would have felt proud that being an Arab didn’t deter that individual from success.

I wish for the love of G-d we as a religious community could learn the difference between being proud of a fellow person because they didn’t allow their color to deter them versus that since of pride being condemned as nationalism.

    For what ever its worth.

    Salaam

  27. Racism is no longer the dominant culture. Bigotry takes a back seat in society, while the rest of us move forward.

  28. Tariq,

I forgot to mention one last issue: I will NEVER elevate ANY leader again.
I believe that doing so is extremely dangerous—especially when elected officials are involved.

They must never forget that it’s not about them it’s about the preservation liberty for all people at all times. It’s not about their ego, their pocket book, their associations, and their family. This is nation—not a click.

Idolizing Obama or any elected official will create a situation ripe for tyranny—haven’t we had enough of that with the Patriot Act?

All elected official must be held accountable for their actions and consistently reminded that they work for all people not (((a))) people.

I’m not giving up any more civil liberties for any reason I’d rather die first. I’m thinking about my daughters generation.

    Salaam
P.S. Edith is your comment at me? If so, nothing I said was bigoted: it’s the dam truth. Nobody is going to tell me how to think, feel, or act. I FEEL PROUD of Obama because he didn’t allow colorism to deter him from his goals. If I’m going to be crucified or lynched on this blog for saying that: so be it. Why in the hell do you think so many black Americans and white Americans over the age of 50 are in tears? Get a clue.

  29. Winners:

    Black nationalists:

I think they may be actually the winners in this. I always thought black nationalism was about hard work, traditional values, economic self-empowerment and development, political self-determination (not separatism but actual engagement and direct civic participation in one’s community), strong black families, cultural heritage, clean, vibrant, and strong communities and so on. Most importantly, black unity which was definitely on display when Obama received at least 90% of the black vote.

I suprised that your interpretation of black nationalism is so superficial. Malcolm X message was always about black empowerment and human development.

Whites may think or hope that this is the end of black nationalism but actually it is the beginning.

Obama, Clarence Thomas, Sean Hannity, and Rush Limbaugh, Oprah Winfrey and others whether they acknowledge it or not share the values of black nationalism.

The groups who do not share the values of black nationalism may be gays and hippies. For example, most black nationalist are against gay marriage. Further, some but not all are against interracial marriage.

So interracial and gay marriage people would love to see this as a defeat of black nationalism but those issues do not represent the all of the values of black nationalism.

    White Nationalism:

I do not think this has been defeated either. This is an issue of identity. One term of a black president in the big scheme of things will not make that much a difference.

    Farrakhan:

If you know about the NOI then you know that Obama’s values are similar. Hard work, unity, community development, community security, black business development, self-development, self-examination, and strong tradional values.

    Harold Ford Jr.:

I having been around this guy and knowing a little bit about his history he may not be able to overcome somethings to make on the national stage but he will be an influential figure in the Southeast region.

I really think it is too soon to draw any conclusions at this point. Its fun but really is an exercise in speculation or wishful thinking.

Obama was chosen based upon his performance as a presidential candidate and nothing more. We cannot really extrapolate too much from that fact.

    Salaam

  30. @ Mary Ann a .k.a. Sister Seeking

If you’ve stopped patting yourself on the back, let me defend the scholars you’re making snide remarks about.

Democracy is said to have been created by greek idol worshipers. It’s hallmark is that all men/women were created equal and their votes have equal weight in the society. I know that sounds good to you, but there is one tremendous caveat that you better consider–that’s if you care about your soul when you stand before Allaah: Democracy CONFLICTS with the Book of Allaah as well as the Prophetic Sunnah. Let’s count the ways:

    1. DEMOCRACY IS SHIRK AND KUFR
Democracy, in it’s origin calls for men to govern themselves–no Book of Allaah, nor the Sunnah of His Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa salam). This is shirk and kufr because it nullifies Tawheed in Asmaa wa Sifaat, giving some of Allaah’s Beautiful Names and attributes to the creation i.e. mankind. Names such as Al Hakim (the All Wise), Al Hakam (the Judge), Al Wakeel (the Disposer of Affairs) etc.; as well as Allaah’s attributes, such as Amilul Ghaybi (knower of the Unseen), Khayrul Faasileen (the Best of Deciders), etc.

    2. ALL MEN WERE CREATED EQUAL
Allaah says in His Book that everyone is NOT equal…

39:9 Is one who is obedient to Allâh, prostrating himself or standing (in prayer) during the hours of the night, fearing the Hereafter and hoping for the Mercy of his Lord (like one who disbelieves)? Say: “Are those who know equal to those who know not?” It is only men of understanding who will remember (i.e. get a lesson from Allâh’s Signs and Verses).

Allaah ordered His Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa salam) to ask the disbelievers a rhetorical question “are those equal to those who know not?”. The answer is a resounding no!!! Based on this Ayah, I ask you is it possible that the vote of a scholar is equivalent to a prostitute who uses drugs and fornicates in the streets? There is no way these two people can be equal because one teaches us our Deen, while the other is an open sinner who follows her desires and deserves to have the prescribed punishment given to her. Islaam is a Deen of justice, not equality. Everyone is not equal!

    3. RUNNING FOR OFFICE
It is well-known that the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu alayhi wa salam) said in his Sunnah that you should not give positions of leadership to people who seek the position. In an authentic hadith, he said,

“If you are given a position after you have sought it, Allaah will NOT help you discharge your affair; but if you are given a position of authority and you did not seek it, Allaah will help you in it”. Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa salam) did not speak of his own desires, he spoke from revelation; so given this Prophetic warning, how is it possible that a Muslim votes for anyone who puts him/her-self forward for a position!?!

Factor in the Shar’eeah concept that “that which leads to the haraam is haraam itself”, and you’ll have some of the SOUND reasons why the vast majority of scholars say that voting is haraam. There have been a few who said it is permissible if the person will do good for the Muslims. Obama certainly has not displayed this!

  31. @ Mary Ann

Make no mistake. I am not saying that one person is going to do it all. But this is an inspiring moment. My phone is ringing off the hook with people trying to make up here for the inauguration. Believe me, people are inspired

But we should certainly not put all of our trust in any man. I feel good that the message is changing

    @ Ron

Black Nationalists were against participation in the system and used figures like Bush and Reagan as foils. They also taught that we are not Americans. I would say that the Obama victory is more an outgrowth of the MLK legacy than the black nationalist movement. Blacks moving up and doing well lessens anger and resentment which are great recruiting tools. Compare the late 80s and early 90s (Reagan/Bush) which was good for black nationalism to now. How often do you even hear any mainstream blacks even use the term “black nationalism”?

We NEVER heard Obama speaking of blacks separating themselves.

  32. I RECOMMEND ALL OF YOU READ THE BOOK “SACRED FREEDOM BY HANEEF OLIVER. You can download the entire book as pdf file for free here:

    http://www.sacredfreedom.com/

In this book, the author weighs western ideologies like pluralism, humanism, democracy, secularism etc. against the Book of Allaah and the Propehtic Sunnah. It is an outstanding book to say the least!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s a book review by James A. Cox, “The Midwest Book Review”:

“Sacred Freedom: Western Liberalist Ideologies In The Light Of Islam by Haneef Oliver is about conflict between Western attitudes and Islamic thought as manifested in the illusive ideologies of the democratic constructs of Western philosophy. Introducing a fascinating examination of atheism, humanism, pluralism, democracy and secularism, Sacred Freedom thoroughly grasps the wisdom of the Islamic faith and its way of life through many quotes from the Koran, as well as an extensive progression through the pluralistic and material world of the west. A welcome addition to the reading lists for students of Islam, Philosophy, Sociology, Middle Eastern Politics and Culture, Sacred Freedom is a very strongly recommended and informative addition to academic and community library Islamic Studies reference collections.”

  33. @ Tariq

How can you reconcile your statement that,

“…the future generation is much more promising.”

With the statement of of the Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu alayhi wa salam), who spoke from Revelation when he said,

“Each succeeding generation will be worse than the one that preceded it”!?!

You need to explain this to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. @ Tariq

You are way off the mark, akhi.

How can you call Ron, who is Muslim, to your false belief in participating in this “system” when the obligation of hijrah is written on BOTH of y’all’s necks, and all the rest of our necks as well–until the day the sun rises in west!?!?!?!?! Everyone of us is supposed to be working to get out of here.

Have you disregarded the statement of Allaah,

4:97 Verily! As for those whom the angels take (in death) while they are wronging themselves (as they stayed among the disbelievers even though emigration was obligatory for them), they (angels) say (to them): “In what (condition) were you?” They reply: “We were weak and oppressed on earth.” They (angels) say: “Was not the earth of Allâh spacious enough for you to emigrate therein?” Such men will find their abode in Hell - What an evil destination!

  35. Daud,

It’s by all means certainly your prerogative to hold what ever belief you wish to.
I refuse to disrespect what you believe to be truth because I don’t want other Muslims practicing their intolerance, or abuse on me.

With that being said let me say this:

I only believe in practicing the five pillars of Islam
I only adhere to the six articles of faith in belief only

    That’s it.

I DO believe in democracy and I’m never giving it up–ever–in’sha’Allah.

I have NO desire to ever, ever, ever, be ruled by any Muslim of any race; no desire to be ruled by Islamic law from any Muslim group ever; and no desire to surrender my conscience, will, and being to any one for any reason ever.

Allah asked me to surrender to HIM not “them”

Democracy does not require me to surrender, submit, and to give up.

You are asking me to kill myself, and I won’t do it.

I don’t need your acceptance or approval—Allah is the one with THE authority to save or condemn. That’s why I believe.

    Salaam alaikum

P.S. Your attack on my self-esteem( patting my self on the back) is very common of cultists who try to persuade people to give up their conscience: IT WONT WORK WITH ME.

  36. I referred to “patting yourself on the back” because that is what you were doing. Stop worrying about what I think, and start worrying about how Allaah feels about your statements:

    1. I only believe in practicing the five pillars of Islam
I only adhere to the six articles of faith in belief only…That’s it.

    2. I DO believe in democracy and I’m never giving it up–ever–in’sha’Allah.

    3. “I have NO desire to ever, ever, ever, be ruled by any Muslim of any race; no desire to be ruled by Islamic law from any Muslim group ever;

Making statement like these can nullify your Islaam, ukhti!

  37. @ Tariq

We can agree to disagree but my view of black nationalism is totally different. Black nationalism is varied and more nuanced than what you have defined.

Some black nationalist definitely believed that we should not participate in politics but that is the extreme fringe.

Some people share the values of black nationalist but do not necessarily call themselves black nationalists.

For example, black achievement and excellence is a black nationalist value. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas was a black nationalist. You will find many other black republicans who also share those values. The creed of doing for self and being responible for your community is deeply entrenched in black nationalism.

Many black businessmen started businesses to be more self-reliant.

I do not want to get bogged down in semantics and schools of thought though.

    Salaam

wouldn’t rule the conspiracy peddlers just yet, even before the election a white co-worker with a straight face told me that the anti-christ would have a one world government and be love all over the world because the people would be fooled. He said that it was a concern since Obama was liked everywhere. LOL

So when I stopped laughing right in his face I asked did he consider Obama the anti-christ he said he didn’t know he was only telling me one of the signs

    Swarthmoor says:

But Muslims, too, believe that when the Dajjal comes, there will be essentially a “one world government” and the masses of humanity–including the Muslims–will fall for the hokey-doke. No i do not believe Barrack Hussein is the Dajjal–he doesn’t fit the descripition, but it is obvious that a global system is being established for the Dajjal. That should be CLEAR AS DAY! These Satanic Kabbalistic–get naked in the crypt–sodomites sure ain’t preparing the world for the return of Prophet Jesus. They are on a different agenda ALTOGETHER.

  39. @ Ron

A message of hard work and achievement is not what I call “black nationalism”. That message is good for EVERYONE - not just blacks. Including Clarence Thomas as a black nationalist is a little strange since he is often put up as the personification of an “Uncle Tom”, but I digress.

But, like you said, your and my definitions seems to be semantics. I like to include EVERYONE - regardless of race - in this message. I am optimistic that more blacks will be receptive to this message now

  40. “Anti-American Terrorist Lunatics - They have no longer have a foil to use as a recruiting tool. People overseas also feel good about America. Hopefully with time, they will be totally irrelevant. They are already irrelevant here in the US”

Everyone feels good at the moment, because they’re hoping Obama’s foreign policy decisions will be an improvement over Bush’s. That’s a big terrorist recruiting tool: the wars, the bombings that kill civilians, etc. Once he starts making foreign policy decisions, hopefully that good will won’t erode.

I believe Obama will be different.

  41. “Everyone” meaning “people overseas”

  42. AA.

If you so allow me Brother Tariq, there is one person and one group of people that I personally want to thank from the bottom of my heart.

The person is my father, Felix Ellis (RIP), who ket the vision, ’til the day of his death. Many, many, many times I heard Dad say “One day, daughter, one day a Black man will be the President of the United States. It will be sooner than everybody think. May God grant me life to see it.” May Allah (SWT) have Mercy on us all, Daddy. You did not lived to see it and that saddens me to no end. But I feel I help make your vision a reality. And how soon it was.

The group of people are the “Baby Boomers”, now Mothers and Fathers. Your rebellion back in the 60’s was not about drugs and free love. It would not have lasted if it were. It was about a different way to see the world; about an understanding that humanity tie us tighter than race. You never forgot that, and under those principles you raised the kids that today did not think twice to vote for a Black man for President. They learned of the humanity that tie us and the vision for a better world. You did it baby boomers, and at my eyes, that makes you the greatest generation ever!

Let’s not kid ourselves; racism hasn’t dissapered, and it won’t for a loooong time. Something that lives for centuries do not die in a night. But, this we can be sure of, this country will never be the same. The social and political earthquacke on the night of November 4th was too strong for us not to expect “aftershocks”. President Obama ran a campaign like we have never seen before in a way we have never seen before. The political shenanigans of the past are of no use from now on. And to us Americans of African descent, the path is not without perils; but the door is open. Let’s walk in!

  43. @Daud

You are dead on point. I have totally agree. I wasn’t please to see many Muslims supporting Obama and calling him inspirational. Come on people. Isn’t the Messenger (SWT) not inspirational enough for you. It was just sicking.

And truth be told if we would follow the Sunnah correctly , most of our views would fall closely in line with the Republican platform. Obama is opportunist and I’m just sad most of (Muslim) don’t see it.

  44. Safia says:

I believe Obama will be different.

    Swarthmoor says:

And if the threat of terrorism is eliminated (just keep in mind that it was active under the Clinton Administration), then how will the miltary/industrial (and prison) complex justify its astronmically high budget? How will the increasingly levels of surveillance be justified–how will the CIA justify its meddling–how will the Patriot Act I and II be justified? These folks have a racket based on making and fostering human fear and misery, and then pretending to come up with solutions (to the problems they invented). Of course they do that for a fee (i.e., more “protection money they coerce from the people in the form of taxes) and further erosion of people’s privacy.

Please don’t sleep on these people–not for one minute.

  45. could someone explain tavis smiley? I’m not saying the comment is wrong, I’m just not sure why

  46. @ Ron

There are as many definitions of black nationalism as there are black nationalists. Trying to define black nationalism (or any other type) is like shooting a moving target. All of the “isms” that man devises, just like everything else man makes up, changes all the time. The only thing that does not change is the Book of Allaah and the Prophetic Sunnah, which is firm and meaningful in all places, at all times. What a complete mercy the Deen of Islaam, and the blessing of being Muslim is.

What we learn from the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah, is that black nationalism is haraam for the Muslim to engage in, and Allaah’s Messenger (salallaahu alayhi wa salam) said it’s “one of the coals of the Hell-Fire”. Leave because it stinks!!!!!!!!!

  47. Back to the topic: Post election winners & losers

Another winner is Isreal by having advocates on both sides pushing their cause so much that it becomes the litmus test for the leader of another nation. Thats gansta and winning. (Daud that is winning in the context of this discussion, please hold the transliterated Arabic)

A Loser is Joe Liberman in 2006 commenting on Obama he says “he is a blessing to the senate, to america, to our shared hopes for a safer tomorrow …… as his mentor as his colleague as his friend I look forward to helping him reach to the stars”

By this year Liberman was throwing Obama under the bus in order to make certain the US implements Isreal’s foreign policy no matter which party is in office

Now he’s going to have to kiss Obama’s pinky ring to hold his position

  48. Is it permissible for Muslim minorities to vote in the lands of non-Muslims? - 1Shaykh Abdul-Muhsin al-`Abbaad
Reference: Private sitting with the Shaykh on January 19th, 2007 (29 Dhul Hijjah 1427)

    Category: Contemporary Issues

There is a question from America related to the ruling of Muslims living in non-Muslim countries who vote in local elections. Is it permissible for these Muslim minorities to vote in local elections if they believe that one of the candidates can benefit the Muslims by giving land, allowing them to give dawah, or other benefits?
Shaykh: There is no harm in voting for candidates who will be of more benefit to the Muslims than the others. In this instance, voting for them is an example of doing the lesser of two evils to avoid the greater evil. All of the candidates are disbelievers and, therefore, harmful. However, the candidate who is less harmful to the Muslims is better than the candidate whose harm is far greater.
Questioner: For the one who says that voting is from the innovated means, for example…?
Shaykh: In any event, this is something evil with which the people have been afflicted. If people have two choices, one being abhorrent and the other also detestable but of less harm, which should the people choose? The people should choose the lesser of the two evils, correct? Even though the Roman Christians and the Persians are all disbelievers, the people were happy when the Roman Christians were victorious over the Persians.
Questioner: Some people oppose this by mentioning that they are not forced to vote in the first place?
Shaykh: What I have mentioned is based on the premise that some benefit for the Muslims may be attained by voting. However, if there is no benefit then they should not participate.

  49. Is it permissible for Muslim minorities to vote in the lands of non-Muslims? - 2Shaykh Waseeullaah `Abbaas
Reference: Recording done with the Shaykh’s permission on January 24th, 2007 (5 Muharram 1428)

    Category: Contemporary Issues

The following question, from America, is about voting for those it is believed will benefit the Muslims. We are not asking about a Muslim entering into an election as a candidate, nor are we concerned about Federal elections. Rather, the question is about voting in local elections for those who have the authority to delegate plots of land to the Muslims, abandoned buildings, and other such benefits. If the Muslims don’t vote for them, other groups will and, therefore, acquire these benefits. So, may Allah reward you well dear Shaykh, do you have any advice in this matter?
Shaykh: That which appears correct to me, insha’Allah, is that if some good is anticipated as a result of voting, then we vote. We vote for the candidate as long as he is presently benefiting the Muslims or promises to benefit the Muslims in the future, even if he is not a Muslim. It would be inappropriate for the Muslims to refrain from voting for this individual, especially if the leader of the Muslims can dictate terms, conditions, and other stipulations on him as a result of the Muslims voting. For example, the leader of the Muslims says, ‘We will vote for you on the condition that you support our interests, mention them to your superiors, etc.’ And this applies in any country where the Muslims are a minority, not just in America.
By voting the Muslims may gain needed influence over politicians and other authorities. In return, these politicians and authorities may do something that will benefit Islam and the Muslims. This is especially the case in local elections where, as you have mentioned, the one who wins may have the authority to give away plots of lands on which schools can be built. I am familiar with this because it is even practiced in India. In this instance, it is not befitting in the least for the Muslims to hesitate or delay voting for these candidates.
The Muslims should not hesitate to vote because withholding their votes will not harm these candidates in the least. They will win by the votes of non-Muslims regardless if the Muslims vote or not. For this reason, the Muslims should use their vote as a favor to these candidates. As a result, the Muslims will be placed in an advantageous position of influence over these candidates. When they feel that they are indebted to the Muslims, the Muslims can benefit from their empathy and their sympathetic views and understanding of Muslim causes. This is a general Islamic benefit required by the Islamic public interests. This is our belief.
This is also the verdict given by our Shaykhs in India. Even Shaykh Bin Baaz (may Allah have mercy on him), from what we have heard, used to rule with the permissibility of participating in elections. And for this, insha’Allah, we hope from Allah a good future for the Muslims in every land. If this affair brings good to the Muslims then it’s not befitting to hesitate.
Questioner: May Allah reward you with good. In order to bring about further benefit, dear Shaykh, for those who say that this action includes assisting one who rules by other than what Allah revealed…
Shaykh: This doesn’t assist the one ruling by other than what Allah has revealed in view of the fact that if we don’t vote, the [non-Muslims] will win by their own votes. They will be elected without a doubt. They will come into power by their own accord whether or not we isolate ourselves from them or from the entire world… Thus, this does not assist them in establishing non-Islamic laws. They are the rulers and the ones in authority in those lands whether we vote for them or not. As a result, we should make an effort to influence them in a way that will be beneficial to Islam and the Muslims, insha’Allah.
Questioner: May Allah reward you with good dear Shaykh. Please excuse us for taking so much of your time.
Shaykh: May Allah reward you with good. I mention this with a clear conscience because we have heard our shaykhs give this verdict, especially when it benefits the Muslims. This is also the case in India; some of the idol worshipers in the Parliament speak on behalf of the Muslims and their interests…and it is possible that Allah will aid the deen by using a disbeliever.

  50. @ Daud

    1) Allah has decreed that Barack Hussein Obama has won.

    2) He has also decreed that the ‘ulema give the fatawa listed above, aka “the Haqq”.

    3) I am so sick and tired of this “I’m not African American, I’m Muslim (only)” mentality. Where is it from the Sunnah that we have to negate our ethnicity?

Ak, I’m black, I’m African American and yes, I cried when Obama won. Yes, he’s a kafr, but he’s also African American, just like my kids.

You (read: Salafis) seem to have forgotten your ethnicity, but yet, you’re the main group rockin’ thoubs and Tims or thoubs and Nikes. That’s clearly American, even urban, culture. That’s the origins of “a black thing”.

And how can the people take all the benefits afforded to them by this government, including WIC; food stamps; better medical care (including Medicaid) than many ISLAMIC countries in the word; more freedom of speech (relatively speaking) than some ISLAMIC countries (oh yes, Salafis HAVE lowered them hems upon residing in the Mamlakuh) and been deported for criticizing the rulers, who call us “abd” and “blackies”; and much, much more.

This is crazy. Again, it’s the African American whose identity was stripped and robbed from him. That’s a fact. Every other ethnic group pretty much has theirs intact. I don’t see any Arabs, Paks, Latinos or other than them negating their ethnicity. It’s only African Americans, who go to extremes in Islam or Christianity because they are lacking a sense of self, who do this. Why? Because they don’t know who they are. Therefore, while we should cling to the sunnah with our molars, many of us have gone to the extreme and excluded anything that has to do with our ethnicity.

I know my heritage and I know how I was raised. Can’t quite say the Cosbys because I had only one parent after a period of time, but I don’t need to say I belong to a group, or deny my ethnicity, to feel whole.

Oh yeah, I kept my kids out of school that day so they could see me vote. And I have no problems with that. And I asked them how they felt after the win. “INSPIRED” was the reply.

    Signed,
Sick of the Extremism and Denial of Ethnicity
    An Honorable African American Woman

  51. @ Daud and the other anti-African Americans and/or Salafis.

P.S. For the record, I’m not fooled by the okey-doke either. Obama is a kafr and I’m not pleased with his political views when it comes to Palestine/Israel either. That’s the truth.

I was confilcted about this issue. My being an African American propelled me to vote for him, but it also propelled me to vote against John McCain. Actually, more Sarah Palin than him. And the rest of the neo-South cronies.

My being a Muslimah doesn’t care for Obama, because as I said, he’s a kafr. I’m sure many African Americans Muslims have felt conflicted as well; this is an experience (the victory as well as the conflict) that will affect us more much uniquely than another other ethnic group, Muslim or non-Muslim. But especially the African American Muslim.

I’m reminded of Surah Al Rum, where it says to paraphase, what appears to be a victory may be a defeat and what appears to be a defeat may be a victory.

And that much much more work has to be done. This victory of Obama I do believe benefits us on the whole, but it is just the tip of the iceberg.

Meanwhile, think about the many kuffar that you find disgusting…is it not your job to give them dawah? Where does this elitist attitude come from that they are so low (when you were a kafr yourself, as was I, before reverting)? I remember reading where one of the ‘ulema (or was Shadeed saying this) said we shouldn’t have this opinion, because we were once there. And this attitude isn’t conducive to giving dawah.

These millions of uplifted African Americans who now are more inspired, may also now be the same ones who feel they have a shot in life. Maybe that brother slinging had a moment and said “Yes, I can”. Maybe that sister who has been struggling said “Yes, I can”. And this can lead to living a more moral and righteous, upright life. Which can lead to the Haqq. Don’t forget how many references to Islam have been made during this campaign.

Yes my brother, there is a silver living in every cloud.

SS: AMEN SISTER! AMEN! PREACH IT WOMAN…

  53. @ Daud -

This is the first time that we are in agreement.

    Salaam

  54. WOW! YOU NAILED IT!!!

  55. Yes Yes. I’m happy being me its just Too Many Names to Say sometimes. lol

I’m sick of the extremist ideas too. IF you don’t run your jabbers all day about kalaam and backbitting people trying to figure out what sin they are committing then you are astray yourself. I don’t have time to live a piss poor life. We’re raising balanced boys in this deen and in the US at that.

My middle son went with my husband to vote when he came home after work sister. We all stayed up and watched the voting come in. Everything in balance.

You don’t have to be a black nationalist to live equally Muslim and Black (African American) I can’t separate the two.

  56. As salaam wa laikum,

I definitely think Barack Obama winning the presidency is quite an achievement and I think in a lot of ways it is definitely a shock to the political culture that has shaped how we look at America and what is what.

His having the middle name Hussein does a lot for me and my family personally. My sister and brother used to have to mumble their names to their classmates because one of America’s greatest enemies shared our name, now the President of America shares our name. It feels great. I told my brother that if the white boys in his school make fun of him, tell him Barack is your uncle and that you can em arrested! I think it’s great that whites are going to have to look at somebody in power who looks different from them, much like minorities have forever it seems like.

As a Muslim, however, I’m a little less optimistic especially in regards to foreign policy. Obama’s Chief of Staff Emanuell is the son of a Israeli terrorist, and I doubt this takes Obama from the Israeli lobby which is incredibly strong in the Democratic primary.

I fear that Obama’s presidency will have what my father calls a “Clinton Effect.” During Clinton’s time, America was was at war with Muslim countries, bombed them, and even starved their children through pushing UN sanctions. Nobody complained. I feel that Obama might do things that are harmful to Muslims and will take many lives and that people will be okay with it because they like him and well…most of them didn;t like Bush. I’m afraid of a lack of criticism not from his many Republican detractors and racists who I expect it from, but from his supporters, who are giving him the Messiah treatment. It’s one thing to b the first , but its another thing to be the best, or even a good president.

  57. Another winner will be Bobby Jindal a young sharp one of the future leaders of the GOP

  58. Other winners will be Andre Carson of Indiana and Keith Ellison of Minnesota. They can angle themsleves for bigger things. Other losers could be the concept by some muslims that voting is haram. I am not advocating everyone to vote but to throw that statement around without sufficient research and independent scholarship is not responsible.

  59. Losers:
Pro-Palestine activists and all the Muslims who voted for Bush because they didn’t want a zionist Jew for vice president. Now that Obama appointed Rahm Emmanuel as chief of staff, some are saying, “How can you be pro-Palestinian and have voted for Obama?” The thing is, when is the last time we had a pro-Palestine president? Umm never. And the last time we had a president that really pushed Israel on the Peace Process negotiating table was Carter. And the hostage crisis that came about during the Iranian revolution was the thing that helped do him in. hmmm…..

  60. @ Nazir

both dealing in riba and selecting a non-Muslim to be a leader for Muslims are both indeed haram, this is clear.

yet I agree throw that statement around without sufficient research and independent scholarship is not responsible. and I would add that those who so then should have the courage to propose an alternative.

and judging from what I’ve seen on the internet there is a lot more love in the world for America

  61. The obligatory Obama post…

I’m sure nobody will be surprised that I’m pleased that Barack Obama has won the election. I’ve got various cousins in the USA (of the two I actually know, one lives in North Carolina and one has recently lived in……

  62. This is why Obama got elected….the money his campaign donated to ACORN and their fradulent registrations, as well as people voting for him on the sole basis of race. On October 1, 2008, Howard Stern show asked some people on the street about their choice for president. Anyone who says that people did not vote based on race, listen to this….

  63. [...] Nationalism is an escapist ideology that leads to nowhere. It is a monumental failure and was a major loser on November 4, [...]

  64. Neo-colonialism is the last stage of Imperialism. Nobody is slamming white nationalism. Nobody is slamming the racism that is being exported overseas to Pakis and Zimbabweans and the racist Oppenheimers extracting coltan in DR Congo for Playstation. White nationalism controls the mines of South Africa and Sierra Leone and will spark wars rather than give up their stolen loot! The constituency on this site is pathetic.
