Why Would Burris Accept?
Posted on December 30th, 2008 by Tariq Nelson

Why did Roland Burris allow Governor Capone Blagojevich to use him like this? I would think that any self respecting person would have rejected that man’s appointment. Now he will never be seated

Tariq, You asked the million dollar question! I thought the same when I heard the news.

Mr. Burris would accept because he would like to be a senator and he would never win an election to the seat (he’s lost races for the Democratic nomination for governor three times since 1990).
Blagojevich shoud appoint him, he’s the governor and Illinois should have two senators.
I think the Dems in the Senate are wrong to deny seating him. As a lawyer I think it is illegal to deny seating him (See Powell v. McCormack) and I think the Dems are especially wrong to deny the chance to have a Blackamerican senator who no one (as far as I know) is accusing of doing anything wrong to get the seat.

Can’t say I disagree with you on any of that. My only point is that associating with that guy is political death
I, too, think it’s illegal to deny him the seat. But I also think he should have refused to be seated. Anything this governor puts his hands on is tainted. Rejecting him would have helped in the long run.
