On Monday, Gallop released some polling data on the Muslim Community in the United States. I have been contending that there is no such thing as a “Muslim Community” but instead “Muslim Communities” - largely divided along ethnic lines. In my opinion, one can get a much better feel when one looks at it from [...]

A long article from Philadelphia Magazine about “Jailhouse Islam” in Philadelphia
Last May, Philadelphians were stunned when police officer Stephen Liczbinski was shot in cold blood during an altercation with burqa-wearing robbers. But that murder, and other recent violent acts in the city, has its roots in a form of Islam being taught in our prisons [...]

What do they mean when they say “jailhouse Islam”? Are these things happening in a vacuum or is there a problem with insane converts to Islam? Another convert to Islam (happens to be in Philadelphia again) killed another police officer. It is a pretty good bet that he was mentally unstable.
The story and my thoughts [...]

According to Pew, Black American Muslims - which would include Nigerians, Senegalese and other African Muslims - make up ~1% of the total black population of America or what amounts to around 400,000.
I have heard I have always read that there are around 2 million black American Muslims which would be ~5% of the total [...]

Ebony magazine recently had an article (not online) about the tensions between Somalis and black Americans in Columbus, Ohio. Charles and Jamerican Muslimah (part one and part two) have both commented on the situation since they live in Columbus, OH and Minneapolis (respectively) which are home to the two largest populations of Somalis in the [...]

An article by Jeff Deeny - who apparently misunderstood a few things - about the Germantown Muslim Community in Philadelphia in the aftermath of the Howard Cain burial controversy (Thanks to Br. Tunji)
Excerpts are below the fold with a few of my comments

Michelle Boorstein of the Washington Post wrote an article about one of my pet peeves in the American Muslim community - the system (or lack thereof) of getting “married”.

UPDATE 05/11/08 6:00AM EST: I received this from one of the brothers involved at the Germantown Masjid:
There are two points that NO ONE has bothered to mention:
(1) The brother at the center of the controversy (may Allah have mercy on him) was NOT a member of Germantown Masjid, nor did he frequent the masjid. As [...]

A new conversation is beginning in the Muslim community. We are slowly moving away from the old thinking of isolation and beginning to take the opportunity to engage the community and respond to the massive challenges facing our communities. Initially there was a lot of resistance to this (still is), but the good news is [...]

This film features two Muslims from Baltimore that have spent the last 30 years in and out of prison. This sad film gives a lot of insight to the institutionalized mentality many (Muslim and non-Muslim alike) suffer from upon entering the penal system at a young age. The things these men see and go through [...]

A couple of weeks ago, an Atlanta area judge was so embarrassed by the actions of young black males that he told all non-blacks to leave so that he could talk to them candidly. He repeated the speech in front of everyone after receiving criticism. Complete chaos going on and the Muslim community is supposed [...]
