Dyson vs Buchanan

As for me: I don’t understand what Holder was trying to accomplish in his speech the other day. And Pat Buchanan is correct that the out of wedlock birthrate and crime are both out of control amongst blacks.

If you want to make a social point in a movie, there should be two rules of thumb.
a) Entertainment Value
b) Not making the message overbearing
Do not continue if you do not want to be spoiled…

Changed Times

More than two-thirds of African-Americans believe Martin Luther King Jr.’s vision for race relations has been fulfilled, a CNN poll found — a figure up sharply from a survey in early 2008.
[...]
The poll found 69 percent of blacks said King’s vision has been fulfilled in the more than 45 years since his 1963 “I have [...]

Black Iraqis AFTER Obama’s Victory

Back during the campaign, I posted this story on how black Iraqis were praying for an Obama victory in the US in hopes that it would bring attention to and eventually improve their plight in Iraq. NPR now has a story that updates the situation after the Obama victory.
As a note, the alleged founder of [...]

Page: “Obama Underminds Al-Qaeda”

Clarence Page writes:
It was a lot easier for the Islamist terror organization to frame the United States as a racist, anti-Muslim “crusader” nation before we elected a biracial American named Barack Hussein Obama to be our president.
[...]
As a longtime student of his speeches and ghostwritten autobiography, I don’t think he would appreciate being exploited by [...]

Will Obama Influence Positive Change in Hip Hop?

Talib Kweli thinks that Obama will influence hip hop to move away from the ridiculous lyrics. I hope he is right, but only because the eventual cultural change on the ground (the market) will demand it. Otherwise, as far as I’m concerned, it can die out…(story via Stereohyped)
What does Barack Obama’s presidency mean for pop [...]

Did Cosby Show Help Pave Way For Obama?

Did positive pop culture images of blacks, such as the Huxtables, pave the way for Obama to rise to the Presidency?
There’s an argument circulating that “The Cosby Show” laid the groundwork for President-elect Barack Obama by presenting an appealing black family, the Huxtables, to young TV viewers who grew up equipped to thwart stereotypes and [...]

Black America and American Dreams: Changing Narrative or Changing Perspective

This a guest blog by Kobina Aidoo, a public policy analyst and producer/director of the documentary, The Neo African Americans: how rapid, voluntary immigration from Africa and the Caribbean is transforming the African American narrative.

A. America is full of obstacles for black men
B. America is full of opportunity for everyone
Which of the above [...]

100 Greatest Power Moves

For those that have TV One, they are showing a program tomorrow (11/09/08) called The Blacklist: 100 Greatest Power Moves on the greatest cultural achievements of blacks in America. If it is good, it may be worth purchasing. Check local listings. Here in Northern Virginia (Cox Cable) it is Channel 240. Put it on your [...]

Tuesday: A Night to Remember

A nice video review by Jed Lewison of Daily Kos of last Tuesday night’s election

Post Election: Winners And Losers

I have compiled a list of people that will emerge as winners and losers in the aftermath of the Obama ascendancy to the Presidency
Winners:
(Updated) Community Organizers - How could I forget? After being lampooned by Palin and Guiliani, they were instrumental in this victory. The Obama “ground game” was awesome.
Bill Cosby -Vindication of his message [...]

Mainstream Black American Middle Class

One of the most positive effects of this campaign I have witnessed is that people are noticing that there are hard working black Americans that care for their families. I was born in wedlock. My parents are still married after 36 years. I know several other families that are the same, but these stories are [...]

Not Monolithic

Alfred Liggins in the piece below touches on some of the themes I wrote about a few months ago - blacks are not a monolith. Liggins mentions that black Americans are economically stratified, but it should also not be forgotten that blacks are also ethnically stratified (Liggins counts 11 different groups of blacks). Look for [...]

Stay Focused

When I hear friends say that this election will be a “landslide”, I can’t help but get irritated each time I hear that because the election has not been held yet. It seems like a ploy to rest on our laurels and not finish the job. Yes, the polls look good for Obama, but the [...]
